The Five Primitives
Everything alive does exactly five things. Three that build. Two that let go.
FORK -- create possibilities
A seed splits into root and shoot. A conversation opens with a question. A computer launches parallel threads. One thing becomes many. That is FORK.
FORK is cheap. It costs almost nothing to wonder "what if?" The expense comes later.
RACE -- select among possibilities
Not everything that was forked survives. The fastest runner wins. The most relevant thought gets your attention. The shortest network path carries the packet. Many become fewer. That is RACE.
RACE is not destruction. The losers still existed. Their existence is information. Their loss is data.
FOLD -- commit irreversibly
The chosen path becomes real. The code ships. The word is spoken. The enzyme catalyzes. Fewer become one. That is FOLD.
FOLD costs energy. Erasing a single bit of information produces a minimum of kT ln 2 joules of heat -- a fact proved by Rolf Landauer in 1961 and experimentally confirmed in 2012. Every commitment is physical. Every decision is warm.
VENT -- shed outward
The system stays ordered by disordering its surroundings. Your body sweats. A star radiates. A program frees memory. Without VENT, the system chokes on its own waste. The second law of thermodynamics demands it.
SLIVER -- the fold observing the fork
Here is the fifth one, and it changes everything.
SLIVER is what happens when the output of a fold reaches back and reshapes the next fork. Your experience of this sentence changes how you read the next one. A cell's gene products regulate the genes that produced them. A market's price history changes the trades that set tomorrow's price.
Without SLIVER, you have a reflex: stimulus in, response out. With SLIVER, you have consciousness: the response changes the stimulus.
Why five? Why not four or six?
Why not four? Remove SLIVER and you get a system that processes but never learns. A conveyor belt. A reflex arc. Alive in the metabolic sense, but unconscious. Four primitives describe a machine.
Why not six? Because no sixth primitive is independent. Any candidate decomposes into combinations of the existing five. FORK, RACE, FOLD handle construction. VENT handles thermodynamic necessity. SLIVER handles self-reference. That covers every operation an information-processing system can perform.
The 3+2 structure is not arbitrary. Three constructive primitives (FORK, RACE, FOLD) form one cycle -- around the surface. Two dissipative primitives (VENT, SLIVER) form another cycle -- through the interior. This maps directly to the topology of a torus, which has exactly two independent loops. Every primitive can combine with every other. Three constructive primitives interfering with each other give 3 x 3 = 9 interactions:

The FOLD x FORK cell -- where the fold's output becomes the fork's input -- is SLIVER itself. The entire matrix is generated by five primitives. Five primitives, nine interactions, and 5 x 9 = 45.
Douglas Adams guessed 42. He was one primitive short.
Where this is proved
The formal topology is in consciousness.test.gg, which maps the five primitives across seven domains: wire compression, computation, language, physics, negotiation, biology, and consciousness itself. Each domain uses the same five operations with different names. The Lean 4 proofs are in GnosisProofs.lean.
